The Pope on the Greek island of Lesbos. “Refugees are not numbers, but … – Cable Republic

A few minutes after 8:00 am Francis arrived at the airport in Mytilene, where he greeted him with the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The Pope will visit today the camps for immigrants on the Greek islands. “Refugees are not numbers, but people who have faces, names and stories of life and accordingly should be treated” – the Holy Father wrote on Twitter.

According to the announcements of representatives of the Vatican, the Pope began this morning, spontaneously organized a visit to a Greek island. Francis meets today with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew.

As already stated the Vatican Radio yesterday, the visit of the Holy Father on Lesbos take 5 hours. Upon arrival, Francis will travel to the camp in the village of Moria, where he is approx. 2.5 thousand. Refugees seeking asylum. Then the Holy Father and the patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew to deliver a common message about the difficult situation of migrants in the region of the Mediterranean and sign a special declaration. During the meeting on Lesbos church superiors eat dinner with a group of refugees and pray for the victims of migration.

The Pope has also speak to the inhabitants of the island and the local Catholic community. After the meeting, Francis will travel back to the airport in Mytilene, where he planned a private conversation with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Orthodox hierarchs. For the Vatican, the Holy Father will return by plane.
