Today started an indefinite protest in Polish schools in the Vilnius region. Poles are opposed to the amended Law on Education, which they believe discriminates against students belonging to ethnic minorities.
The start of the strike announced a few days ago the Forum of Parents of Polish Schools in Lithuania.
The strike started this morning from Mass the Gate of Dawn. The Mass was attended by about a thousand people.
The reason for the protest is the revised Law on Education dated. March 17, 2011, according to which there will be m.in unification of the Lithuanian language exam for all students in Lithuanian schools and schools of national minorities. Students studying in schools of national minorities, so they would have a few years to catch up hundreds of hours of program differences, often at the expense of other subjects.
The Lithuanian education reform strikes mainly in schools, where they learn to minorities. In carrying out the reform of the Lithuanian Ministry of Education relies on a constantly decreasing number of students in educational institutions, which is justified by the degrading status of individual schools. Organizers of protests say that the nature of the reform is clearly discriminatory.
