I really enjoy watching all those TV series that you describe? How do you find the time?
do not watch all the series, about which we write for the show’s section with news, because there are hundreds of them. I watch all the series that review, which is about 30 – 40 titles per week and probably 120, maybe 150 titles a year. Indeed, these numbers seem ridiculously high, especially since I have yet to find time for these to describe. How do I do? Well, exactly the same way as the reviewers games to find time for his hobby that became a job. In both cases it is very time consuming and so.
I will be even more time-consuming, because good, very good or even outstanding series arises from year to year more and more.
2014 US television stations and Internet platforms like Netflix and Amazon, issued 328 own titles. As many as 180 of them released telemarketer that virtually guarantee high quality. The growth is amazing – at a time when her debut “The Sopranos” cable stations emit little more than 20 series throughout the year. And yet these 180 titles today kablówek is not everything now to play yet entered the internet and unexpectedly turned out to be a very important player. Netflix and Amazon are producing almost exclusively series worth watching, they can not be ignored.
And how do you find the time? Definitely worth acute sit down and make a selection, get rid of everything that fills time and brings absolutely nothing. Too bad life for a bad series. But the best ones really can impress.
You describe it all professionally. How do you manage to not tangle in the story, the fate of the characters and intrigues many production?
My head has long since resemble serialowy garbage, if I was not picky. I do not watch everything. I watch what is interesting, what is being said and what to closely follow. If something is worth remembering, rather, I did not weep. In any other case, a small loss. Besides watching everything and remembering everything that happened to any art. I say more, I am I follow it to keep the story series, which I do not watch, because every day I read dozens of news stories, for all television production, not only those of “my” and wanting, not wanting a lot of memorize. The trick is to make the selection so as not to miss us nothing of value, while that is time-consuming, which is watching the TV series, not consuming all life. I’m not sure I are successful, but I hope that at least the readers of episodic save time and nerves thanks to our texts.
And where the idea for the establishment serialowa.pl page? You thought suddenly one of the first that “Hey, now we watch the series, perhaps to use it?”
That’s how it was! Though not kładłabym emphasis on “use”. Episodic came up in early 2011 with Michael elbows, in one of those dark pubs in the Kazimierz district, where nobody looks at his watch because time and so there is in place. I had had a few years on the run from the microphone after parliament, political journalism, I was terribly disappointed and was looking for something new. Michael then not even think that next year will create one of the most interesting political websites in the Polish Internet. We were young, naive, it seemed to us that it’s very simple – to build a site about something, which on one hand is honored on the other hand, as you say, which is just on top.
Since we spent long hours talking about the series, it was the motto – “Let’s talk about the series” – opened with several friends, mostly current and former journalists and movie series. We wanted it represented, not only for us, a kind of extension talk of the series with friends. We did not want to be experts, we just wanted to write about what we see. And let me tell you I did not think we would then know what to grab. All terribly loved the TV series “Mad Men,” which can easily be seen if one looks at the color of the page. It seemed to us that if we write a lot about “Mad Men,” everyone will be happy – we and readers. And then how moved … People started to ask us what else worth watching, suggested us to write about this and that, and more about it. Harmless hobby quickly became a job, and that such a half-time.
Do you not see the ocean serials stereotyping, some łopatologicznych cripples feature films, guaranteeing viewership?
Of course. Most of the series is średniaki, based on diagrams. American television communal still flooding the poor quality sitcoms police and wet behind the ears, because this is accustomed to the audience. A and cable TV are becoming more behind the ears, because instead of putting on fresh ideas, prefer to order all kinds of spin-offs, prequels or copies of “Game of Thrones”. You can not avoid this, television must be something to keep, and therefore can not risk of each title.
But every year created a few dozen, and sometimes more new titles, which are neither schematic nor łopatologiczną and which contribute quite a bit to the prevailing golden age of TV series. Last year amazed me humble, intimate, “The Affair”, telling the story of the consequences of a romance with different points of view. This year’s big hit HBO released, I’m talking here about the document, “Cursed: The Life and Death of Robert Durst,” which had huge consequences in real life. Fresh ideas really lacking, and money for their implementation channels are more than ever.
Following up, what is your recipe for a successful show? No matter what the genre.
Do something that did not exist before. Just.
What is your favorite foreign production?
I have a huge soft spot for “Mad Men,” from which began the story Serialowa.pl. It’s great written, almost literary series that in an attractive way to beat one of the most remarkable decades in US history. And that spawned a retro TV and old advertisements on our walls. I love “Breaking Bad”, “The Wire,” “The Sopranos,” which are simply serials big, “Twin Peaks,” which I watched as a kid surreptitiously, fascinated by the all-encompassing strangeness, and “Seinfeld,” which are the best sitcom ever created. All of these titles are links several things: original, bold, well-written, brilliantly played and often ahead of his time. So it was with “Twin Peaks”, which at first was watched by 30 million people, and they did a stranger, the more the audience diminished. So it was with “The Wire,” which, never became a prize to which merited. Fortunately, a good series today have it easier than ever before.
A Polish show?
The question of the Polish favorite show is very difficult, because I’ve never seen a successful Polish TV series. I tried last year to watch “pack” HBO and well, as Polish series was pretty good. It is no coincidence that the world is watching serials Swedish, Italian, Spanish or even Romanian (and I mean “Pride”), and at Polish productions abroad do not hear anything. It’s still ahead of us. Let’s hope so.
Why do you think Poles are not able to create a really good show, with international potential? After all, based on specified by you earlier examples from other countries, it is not about funding.
It’s not about funds, it comes to wean themselves from thinking patterns and that we no longer so much copy western productions. Why our writers still serve us the same thing? Why so much insist to make Polish versions of “Grey’s Anatomy” and other popular tapeworms, rather than come up with something no one else had? It’s a mystery to me. As the 40-millionth country does not have 11 players who could do something, so there are of several writers who could write a loud series, so in the style of Oscar-winning “Ides”. At the same time I’m not talking about the subject, I’m talking about how “Ida” enthused the West, because they were there such a thing has not yet seen. Subject does not matter, we refer to the PRL, we can write something modern, light or heavy, whatever. The idea is to take a chance, spend the money on something that could be a great success or a spectacular failure. However, clearly Polish television stations this risk even more scared.
Does the series as seen in the lens of the socio-cultural and political changes taking place among us? Or perhaps such intellectual digressions around a purely commercial products are the strength?
I choose option number one. Last readers episodic complained to me that in our magazine there was an awful lot of feminism. So I explained that no, suddenly began to make good policy for its own whim. Just comment on this, what is being said. And he says now a lot of strong, complex female heroines, because over the years such television was not. They were one-dimensional female characters, written by male writers. Now women have their moment on television, there is more feminism, LGBT. And of course, this has to do with changes in society, opening up on it, which has so far not said out loud. It is no coincidence that this year in terms of comedic several Golden Globes took home not no ordinary, siermiężny sitcom, as is often the case in previous years, and the comedy-drama “Transparent” about a family that discovers that their father – an older gentleman on retired – for years he disguises himself as a woman and refers to himself as “Maura”. It is no coincidence that the “ideal wife” ruled by strong women who never, ever discuss feminism, and simply do their job, which can not be putting up guys in the corners in zmaskulinizowanym world of Chicago politics and law.
Just as in the nineteenth century novel it was a mirror of strolling along the highway, so today it is the television series. And as ever printed in newspapers novels, you can watch episode after episode or absorb all at once.
noticed some permanent mechanisms clearly signs that popular series was beginning to fade? Besides, of course, entym season and the associated plain boredom.
That’s right you’re wrong with entym season and the associated boredom. If the show is still good, the audience did not give up, even if it was the fifteenth season. Ba, the audience even bad series does not give up, watching them for sentimental reasons much longer than can be seen. Just look at the audience of recent seasons of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” in the United States.
In general phenomenon of which Groucho here is complicated, each case should be considered individually. There are, for example, TV series, which from season to season are getting better, “Breaking Bad”, “Justified”, “The Americans”. There are some that could go on forever, and probably would not notice a decrease of quality (“Seinfeld”!). Finally, there are such productions, which were scheduled for fewer seasons than ultimately ordered. The writers have commented on, although no longer have to write about. It is indeed a sad thing, fans of “Dexter,” “Desperate Housewives” and “How I Met Your Mother” confirm. Now the same fate awaits “House of Cards” – the original denim 12-episodic miniseries, where it was the same “flesh”, the American version tapeworm, which is increasingly fighting for the Frank Underwood parsley.
Not so long ago the most serious actors playing major motion pictures and TV series shunned and treated them somehow worse. Today I think is the simplest and shortest pass for a career in Hollywood …
Oh, certainly not the simplest and shortest! Sometimes it takes years before the actor beats on TV – and it does not cool scenarios, and this series they charged him, and then again at the casting preferred someone else. Look at Jon Hamm or Bryan Cranston – none of them was a youngster when he came great success. And none of them quickly became the star of the big screen after work on the show. It certainly is neither short nor simple way.
But you’re right in one thing: indeed television is no longer something worse, and the stars of cinema more often come to her, not because they have no choice, in search of something else, something more, some new idea for yourself . Sometimes it’s just a way to rescue the dilapidated career, but often it is a conscious choice. It’s on television are now the best scenarios, this TV can show a full range of acting skills, because the characters are deeper, better scratched, shown with all possible sides. This television showed what they can do Claire Danes, Matthew McConaughey, or even Colin Farrell, who positively stand out in a feeble second season of “Detective”. At the same time it became more and more crowded – even a few years ago a famous name any possible guaranteed prize today someone like Clive Owen gets even nominated for an Emmy for “The Knick” because it turns out that all is not enough. It’s really fantastic that television continues to be uglier sister theater, and becomes something prestigious for the actors. As a viewer I can only rejoice. And I can assure you that in a few years we will see in the series even more familiar faces from the big screen. It is the natural order of things, sitcoms are on a wave and a long time will be.
Tell me honestly – if only I watch the TV series “Chicago Fire”? Because sometimes I have the impression …
Yes, only you (laughs)!
