Nils Muižnieks, Commissioner for Human Rights, appealed to President Andrew Duda to not sign the media law, while the Secretary General of the RE wants clarifications in connection with the amendment of the Act – TVN24 reported.
“I urge the Polish President to not sign the amended media law and upheld the independence of public television and radio in Poland” – wrote Nils Muižnieks in a statement published by the press office of the Commissioner.
The Commissioner is concerned that the amended media are completely under the influence of government and control this is to facilitate the possibility of dismissal and appointment of members of supervisory boards and managements of radio and television. “These findings are inconsistent with the standards of the Council of Europe which puts the emphasis on the fact that the public media remained independent of political and economic” – said in a statement. Muiznieks demands on the issue of social debate.
On the other hand, the Council of Europe spokesman Daniel Holgten in an interview with TVN24 reported on the publication of complaints relating to, among others, freedom of expression and complaints from associations of journalists to design a new media law in Poland. Planned is also the general secretary of RE letter to the head of Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski asking for clarification and consultation with experts in EU Law. As spokesman RE, the secretary wants to make the law was consulted with experts.
