German parliament: mass killing of Armenians was genocide – Cable Republic

Despite the protests of the Turkish authorities’ resolution on this matter supported in the Bundestag all parliamentary clubs.

The President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammer said that “the current government in Ankara is not responsible for this crime,” and representatives of the parliamentary clubs that the adoption of the resolution is not “placing the Turkish authorities in the pillory.” One of the deputies of the Left said that “Germany helped the Armenian genocide”, hence are complicit in the crime. Bundestag reminded that many countries, including the Vatican, Russia and France, have already recognized the war crimes of Armenians as genocide.

The Turkish government tried until the last minute to stop the adoption of the resolution by the Bundestag. Prime Minister of Turkey, a few hours before the vote, said that the attitude of the Bundestag would be “a real test of friendship” between Berlin and Ankara. Earlier, Turkish President held a telephone conversation with Angela Merkel, who was not present during the vote, but her party odowiedziała the adoption of the resolution.

The Armenian Genocide is the second after the Holocaust the best documented and described genocide made by the state on the ethnic group in modern times. One of the side effects of the genocide became creation of the world Armenian diaspora. It is estimated that during the First World War, in the years 1915-1917, and the result could have killed about 1.5 million people.
