Army was formed under the command of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Polish General Wladyslaw Sikorski, 14 February 1942 year. It was the successor to the Polish Victory Service and the Association of Armed Struggle.
With time, became the largest underground army in occupied Europe, where it should be emphasized that the army was voluntary. In 1944, their number amounted to approx. 400 thousand.
The purpose of its creation was to prepare for a national uprising. Over the years of its operation, he armed the up, trained, led diversion and intelligence.
Its first commander was General Rowecki “Grot” – pre-war officer, a soldier of the First Brigade of the Polish Legions, had fought with the Bolsheviks, from the first moments after the surrender of the September participant in the conspiracy. After his arrest June 30, 1943 he replaced it on the function Tadeusz Komorowski ps. Boron. The last commander was Leopold Okulicki “Bear.”
Army was disbanded January 19, 1945.
