The foreign ministers of the EU countries decided at today’s meeting to extend economic sanctions against Russia, in connection with its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea. The sanctions were extended until 31 January 2016.

The Moscow authorities have identified maintaining sanctions as “destructive” for the Russian economy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commenting on last week EU action, he stressed that the Russian response to the sanctions will be based on the “principle of reciprocity”, thus suggesting the possibility of a ban on food imports from the West.
In March, EU countries decided to extend by six months, until mid-September, visa and financial sanctions against 150 individuals and 37 companies and organizations responsible for undermining the territorial integrity of Ukraine. This decision was related to the then escalation of fighting in the eastern Ukraine, including Mariupol attack, which killed 30 people.
