On the basis of 1,800 children aged 6 months to 8 years, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospidal for Children and Harvard School of Public Health found that watching television shortens sleep surveyed .

children and their mothers participated in a long-term Project Viva, whose aim was to examine the various factors affecting health, both during pregnancy and after birth. Among the factors studied was also the influence of television.

For the first time the mother was asked about the TV when their children were 6 months. Surveys were repeated later every year for seven consecutive years. Mother corresponded to include the question of how long the infants were housed in the same room where the TV was, as long as the older children watched television, or children aged 4-7 years slept in the same room where the TV is and how long the children slept at all.

Studies have shown that each additional hour of television viewing is associated with shortening of sleep a child about 7 minutes. This effect is stronger in boys than in girls. Children of other races than white are more likely to sleep in a room with a TV receiver and in the presence of them in the bedroom shortened sleep an average of 30 minutes per night.

These studies confirm the findings of previous short-term studies, which show that both watching television and sleeping in a room with a TV shortens sleep, which may have a negative impact on mental and physical health.
